The weather teases us with clear skies and pleasant days, until you step outside and realise it is still freezing! We’ve all been itching for adventure for months now. Surely the weather will subside for a day or two at some point, so why not take the opportunity to get away? Family vacations don’t need to be fully kid-focused, nor do they need to be exotic, below I look at some adult-friendly weekend break ideas that are ideal for an away break. Go on, you deserve it.
With the summer holidays just peeking around the corner it is worth planning ahead to keep those bored work week whines at bay.
A far more thrilling trip than a zoo, Longleat was the first safari park out of Africa and offers children and adults the chance to see these incredible animals in a much kinder and more natural environment. Famed for its lions and monkeys, the park also accommodates giraffes, zebras, cheetahs as well as numerous other flying and swimming creatures.
The park is open through to October with last entries no earlier than 4.30pm. For cheaper ticket prices, you can buy online here. There are associated hotels and accommodation that you can book through Longleat that will make your African adventure that much more luxurious, or shop around the gorgeous independent boutique hotels and B&Bs in the lovely Wiltshire countryside.
Downton Abbey Themed Stay
Even if you’re not Downton’s biggest fan, you must admit that Highclere Castle is spectacular, no? Admission tickets are highly sought after, but to save you disappointment you could try afternoon tea at the castle, or, if you’re feeling particularly lavish why not stay at London Lodge?
If you do happen to be a diehard Downton fan, you can get an additional feel for Crawley’s most famous family at other now-iconic locations. There are numerous Cotswold holiday cottages beautifully decorated with gorgeous Downton style four poster beds and stunning period furniture that you will feel like you’re in Highclere anyway! Most of these are children and pet friendly too so you can have your own cottage and not have to worry about any other guests (or making too much of a mess). We’ve written about the top reasons to make a home in the Cotswolds before, what can we say? We’re big Cotswold buffs.
For the serious thrill seekers out here, Alton Towers is the largest theme park in the UK and well worth a visit. Like all my other suggestions you can of course stay on-site in not 1, not but 3 Alton Towers hotels!
Apart from the themed hotels, which are reason to visit in themselves, Alton Towers boasts an incredible thirteen rides, as well as a water park, tree top quests and golf, and even a spa which must be well deserved at the end of a day here! An adult ticket costs just shy of £40 depending on when you book. While Alton Towers offers great deals on short breaks themselves, it is worth shopping around for other discounts to get the most for your money.
That should be enough to get you going as we steamroll into Summer! Whether it’s a big family weekend away or just an overnight stay with your other half, be sure to book soon or risk disappointment (or very high prices).
